“I Hate Yoga”

I Hate Yoga!

Yes you read that correctly. We live in a culture where we are conditioned to LOVE everything and if something is hard, we just move on and do something else that makes us feel good. Instead of dealing with conflicts or challenges, we just delete and un-friend people from our lives.

In relationships, we easily discard the ones that have issues.  Just look at the divorce rate. When it’s hard, just give up. That is what our culture is teaching us. There are many options and it’s easier to quit and do something that will make us feel good. When I have a tough yoga class, (and I often do) I want to quit! I can easily do other types of workouts, Pilates, barre, dance, tai chi, cross fit, zumba, etc…when something doesn’t work out, there’s always something else.

In my yoga class this week, about twelve minutes in, I was done! I was challenged and I wanted to leave. In my mind, I was battling. “What am I doing here? I hate this!” I have a love/hate relationship with yoga. Although in the moment, I hate it, I love who I’ve become in the process. Yoga teaches me surrender, patience, self love, non judgement, how to overcome fear, perseverance, self acceptance, all in about seven breaths. All of 30 seconds! In the moment that I was ready to bolt out of class, I learned how to persevere through the tough pose. Before you know it, we were back in child’s pose. Ahhhhh…

I confess, I want to be good at everything. I don’t like not being good at something. You can’t fake yoga, you either have the pose or you don’t. The frustrating part is that one day you may have the pose perfectly and the next time you do it, you’re falling all over the place. Yoga keeps me on my toes:) but isn’t that real life? You have victories and successes one day and then you fail miserably the next day, sometimes in the same hour! The lesson is how to fail gracefully. How to breathe through the rough moments of life. How do we respond when the going gets tough. I know it sounds trivial that I’m learning these important life lessons from yoga but this is a place where I know I will learn some of these important tools even if it’s just for one hour a week.  It’s one thing to know it in my mind and mentally understand it, it’s a whole other ball game when you can physically experience it in your practice.

Persevering through the pose doesn’t guarantee that I’ll get the pose perfectly next time. That’s why it’s called yoga practice, not yoga perfect:) That’s not the goal. For me, the goal is who I am becoming during that pose. How was I mentally, emotionally, spiritually? The physical practice is not the point.  The physical accomplishment is just a by-product of the practice.

So as you go about your day today, be mindful. What do you hate? What do you do during those moments? Whether it’s traffic, an unpleasant work environment, family drama, teenagers, tumultuous relationships, unemployment, financial problems, etc… How do you get through these moments? Do you drink to “take the edge off”, do you go off and unleash your anger, do you give in and overindulge in food or other substances, do you just check out and give up, play on your smart phone or computer? No matter what your default is, fight to stay present. Feel the emotions, breathe through it. This too shall pass. Let the moment teach you something, otherwise, it will keep coming back until you learn it.  That is the TRUTH!

Let us embody what surrender and peace looks like. Enjoy the process my friends. Persevere through the tough moments in life and love who you become because of it!

Day 11 of Clean Eating Challenge!

We’re at the halfway mark.  How’s it going!?  I know the more I do these challenges the more I grow and progress.  It’s definitely a work in progress.  I’ve been coaching for the last couple of years and I have really seen a huge change in my own personal journey.  It doesn’t matter how fast you progress as long as you’re going the right direction:)

3.   Mantra for the day:  Gratitude
Make a list of ten things you are grateful for.  Sit and marinate on that. Our health is priceless!!!  You can have all the millions in the world but if you don’t have your health, what good is it?  I never take my health for granted and I thank GOD everyday for my health and for the health of my loved ones.  When you are tempted to be critical and hate your thighs or butt or whatever…remember that you are healthy and that you have the opportunity to be better everyday.

Day 17 of 21 Day Challenge!

Hello friends!

Is it just me or is it getting harder the closer we are to the end!?  Man, I’m starting to get really bitter watching everybody else eat FOOD! LOL!  I know I just have to dig deep and persevere through the rest of this week.  I’m going to continue a clean eating challenge and will not just fall back to my old habits.  If you want to join me, sign up here!!!

Mantra of the Day:  ALL IN!!!
Part of my having a bad attitude today is because I was not all in today.  There are days that I have so much peace and I’m surrendered to the process.  Those days are great because I’m all in.  There’s no turning back, no excuses, and I feel great about the decisions I’m making.  Then there are days where I’m not committed, I doubt, I falter, and I’m whiny because I can’t get my way.  Listen, toughen up and stay true to your commitment.  Stop your crying and dig deep for inspiration, motivation, and strength.  I know this is good for me and that I’m in training mode right now.  I have to retrain my taste buds and my mindset on what healthy is.  You can too!  Don’t give in, don’t give up.  Put it all on the line and commit to finishing strong!  XOXO:)

Day 11 of 21 Day Challenge!

We are at the halfway mark!  There’s no turning back now!  Granpa came to town and decided to take us to an “All you can Eat” pizza/pasta restaurant.  Seriously!?  Luckily, they had an all you can eat salad bar and I stuffed myself with spinach, mushrooms, olives, onions, and had oil and vinegar dressing.  Emergency averted!  Whew!!!

Today’s focus is on VULNERABILITY.  We love this word don’t we!?  Doesn’t it just give you the warm fuzzies? Or does it make you run for the hills???  Well, during this cleanse, you are stripping and shedding the normal comfort of food.  Sometimes, food can mask our true feelings.  How many times have you reached for that gallon of ice cream after a break up? Or pig out on hot wings after a bad fight?  Whatever your vice is, food is an easy numbing agent.  When we take away those external comforts, you have to start dealing with what you’re really feeling.  Even our smart phones can give us that quick comfort and escape.  When we feel like being selfish and not engage, we just get on our phones, watch TV, or computer screens.  Take today to really be mindful of what you’re feeling.  Maybe carry a journal around and really allow yourself to feel.  Don’t talk yourself out of feeling angry by justifying or rationalizing a situation.  It’s OK and perfectly human to say, “You hurt my feelings.”  or “Please don’t do that, that really bothers me.” Connect to your true emotion and express it in a mature, loving way.  Vulnerability is sharing your WHOLE heart and not expecting anything in return.  It’s about being honest and real about where you are at that moment.  Don’t rehearse it and make it pretty with bows and ribbons.  Just be completely honest.  I love yoga because I feel vulnerable when I practice.  I can’t fake it, I can’t just check out.  I can either do the pose of not.  There’s no apology.  I have to accept my limitations and be OK with where I’m at.  That is how we should live.  Stop living for other people’s expectations.  Stop trying to please everyone.  Stop trying to prove your worth.  You are already accepted and loved just the way you are.  Part of being vulnerable is accepting that you are loved even as imperfect as you are.  Take a deep breath….step into today, willing to see yourself as you are.  A created being, fearfully and wonderfully made.

 

Try these YOGA poses and practice being in tune to your feelings.  What does it bring up for you?  How does it make you feel?  I took an awesome Yoga class a couple of weeks ago and I totally broke down in tears.  I was so raw and full of emotion.  I had to stay after and talk it through with my amazing, compassionate teacher.  It totally took me by surprise!  I had no idea I had all this stuff inside of me.  For some reason, it decided to come out in Yoga class!  Vulnerability for me meant to let it go and trust the process.  Normally, I would have just sucked it up, told myself to stop crying, and left as early as possible so I didn’t have to deal.  I stayed and I worked it out.  It was awesome!!!

 

Recipe of the Day:  Southwest Vegan Salad

Southwest vegan salad recipe from She Knows

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups corn kernels
  • 1 cup red onion, chopped
  • 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2-3 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Grated zest and juice of 1 lime
  • 2 teaspoons canned chipotle in adobo sauce, drained and minced
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 avocado, halved, seeded, peeled and chopped
  • 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine corn, onion, black beans, tomatoes, olive oil, lime zest and juice and chipotle, tossing to coat.
  2. Divide the salad into bowls and top with avocado. Garnish with cilantro to serve.

Day 4 of 21 Day Challenge

Day 4

Power of intention- mindfulness, bring present…daily acceptance.
It’s not going to be pretty and perfect everyday. What is your focus?

Yoga was a great tool for me. It taught me how to be in my body. In yoga, it’s impossible to check out. You have to be fully present or you won’t be able to do it. Yoga gave me a physical example of what being present and mindful looks like. I was able to practice that on and off the mat. It’s a gift! I remember doing yoga after my third child. I did it strictly for vanity reasons. I was trying to get rid of the last of the baby weight and I tried everything! The first three years of practicing yoga, I hated it!!! After every half moon, standing split, and warrior three I vowed never to come back. For some reason, I kept on showing up. I remember one class while I was in savasana, I laid there and tears just started flowing out of my eyes. I had finally surrendered and yoga won! I had to physically feel what surrender felt like. It was freeing. I still don’t practice yoga as much as I would like, but it definitely has changed my life!  I’m a work in progress.

Today, accept where you’re at. Embrace it. Stop fighting it. Surrender. It will free you. Don’t be afraid.

Food Today:
Breakfast- banana and almonds, banana lara bar
Lunch- baked sweet potato with coconut oil and sea salt
Dinner- Black bean tacos with homemade gucamole
snacks- hummus, carrots, apple, berries,
Drinking more water:)))  Starting to crave it more.  It’s super cold in Austin and I really miss having hot tea or hot chocolate:(((

Exercise:
I taught two classes today and had a great workout.

So far, I’m feeling great!  I feel like my spirit is lighter, almost like I’m floating:)  I received some very bad news today and I had a lot of faith and peace about it.  I’m not going to over analyze why I’m having a good day, I’ll just take it and enjoy it:)

Day 10 of April Challenge!

 

Day 10

I was hoping my day would be a little more productive today.  Instead, I was distracted by every shiny object and was pulled in many different directions.  I struggle with being a procrastinator.  It’s really something I hate about myself.  Nothing makes me more productive than the last minute!  LOL!  Arghhhh…..I am really trying to overcome this.  Somehow, I do get things done and will make it happen!  I just wish I was more of the tortoise than the hare.  Slow and steady wins the race, right!?  I will overcome this weakness!  This is something I really want to go after in my character.  I’ll start tomorrow;))) LOL!!!  How do you overcome procrastination????

1) Yoga- Another chance to find your center.  Take some time to meditate today.  Make it part of your daily practice to find some quiet time and clear your hard drive:)  The real work starts within. Breathe in and breathe out:))))

Meditate on this.  This is powerful and beautifully said….

 

2) Mantra- Perseverance!

Perseverance is the complete antithesis of procrastination.  Quitting is easy, perseverance takes blood, sweat, and tears!  I know that in order for me to overcome my procrastination I have to take ACTION.  It doesn’t have to be a HUGE step but I must take baby steps and make progress.  Make a decision to take action everyday towards your goal.  Do not quit!!!

Day 10 Spring Clean Challenge!

How’s it going?  Let’s get out of the habit of putting a time limit on our progress.  Let’s do this for the long haul!!!

1. Thursday- Yoga day!  Take this time to stretch your body and discipline the mind.  Be still and be present.  This is not easy.  We have to train ourselves to get there.

 

 

2.  Food- Green Smoothie Time!!!

3. Mantra for the Day:  Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body!!!
Whenever you decide to change something important in your life, you will go through resistance.  It seems as if everything is against you going after your goals.  Why is that!?!?  Well, it’s easy to be comfortable and safe.  Even if you don’t like where you’re at, the thought of having to do something different is overwhelming.  If you are just starting a workout regimen, you will be sore.  If you are trying to eat well, you will want to cheat.  If you are trying to be more patient, it seems like everywhere you go, there will be a line and there will be traffic!  More than just having pain in our sore bodies, there is pain to changing.  We have to decide that the pain of staying the same is worst than the pain of changing.  Fight through it.  Persevere!  Dig deep and do whatever you have to do.  You will get stronger, you will change, you will grow.  Take it one day at a time….

Day 3 of Spring Clean Challenge!

Day 3

Hello party people!!!  Thank you so much for joining us on this amazing journey of healing, health, and wellness.  I am so proud of you guys for really engaging this part of your life.  You are going to learn tools for the rest of your life.  This is not just a lose weight quick phase.  We’re in this for the long haul.  Looking forward to learning with all of you.

1. Thursday- Yoga Day!  I love yoga because no matter how many years you’ve been practicing, there’s always room to grow.  Yoga keeps me humble because you never arrive!  Just when you think you have something down, there’s a variation of the pose that will challenge the tar out of you!  So push yourself, go to your edge, and keep challenging yourself.  Most importantly, breathe…

 

 

2.  When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.  Take the time to sort out your food and snacks into single servings.  This might seem like a pain in the butt but it will pay off.  Especially when your day is busy and you have to drive kids all over town, it seems easier to go to the drive thru when you are starving and you have starving kids yelling for food.  Pack snacks for them too.  You will save money and feel great that you are giving your family healthy options. Be inspired!!!  Check out these pictures. I want to be this disciplined:)))

 

 

3.  Mantra for the Day:  This is my Moment!
Why not take advantage of this moment?  What are you waiting for?  Lately,  there has been intense situations going on personally.  Friends and family with life threatening illnesses, friends losing loved ones, families being ripped apart.  Life happens.  In this time of your life, ask yourself if you are taking advantage of every opportunity?  Are you seizing the day?  This will not happen by wishing and hoping things will work out.  How are you actively pursuing your goals?  As it pertains to fitness, ask yourself if your actions or lack of action is taking you closer to your goals.  It’s a decision.  You are either going to live your life by design or by default.  So take this moment…don’t wait another day….stop procrastinating and take action.  Every day do something to actively go after your dreams.  Stay consistent and take advantage of our exclusive member’s page for support and encouragement.  Remember, you got this!!! Every little step leads to a shift and then momentum snowballs!!!

3. Mantra for the Day-  Kill the Spirit of Judgment!
Do you ever get insecure about what others think about you?  Do you ever wonder if people are talking about you or criticizing you behind your back?  If you have ever felt that way, you struggle with the spirit of judgment.  So, if you are afraid of what others are thinking about you it’s because you are casting judgment on other people.  You might say, “ME!?  Never!!!”  Well, how’s your judgment with yourself?  Now, I know you’re saying, “Well,  that doesn’t count!” LOL!  Yes, it does count! What you put out there will come back to you.  So, STOP IT!!! The more you focus on honoring others (including yourself, actually, especially yourself) the more you will kill the spirit of judgment in your life.  You will begin to notice that you really don’t care what people are thinking abut you.  Seriously, it’s such a liberating feeling to walk free from judgment and condemnation.  Practice love and grace.  That will go a long way…with others, and most importantly, yourself!

If you’re paying attention, we skipped day 10.  Sorry, I was totally swamped and didn’t have time to do it.  Today is Valentine’s Day!!!  I hope that no matter where you are in your life that you feel special and loved.  If you don’t have a Valentine today, it’s OK.  You are still awesome:))))

Try a new workout today that will stretch your body and your mind.  These are some great types of workouts that will help balance your body from all that cardio and weight training.  It’s great to mix it up a bit.  Let us know what you think:)))

3. Love Post!  Love yourself
This is a funny mantra for Valentine’s but the truth is, it starts here.  If you don’t genuinely love yourself, you will have problems in relationships.  Whether you are married, single, divorced, widowed, etc…you have to learn self love.  I love what I do because I am passionate about empowering people to love themselves right now.  Not when you lose ten pounds, or when you can fit in to those jeans, etc.  You MUST love yourself right now as you are.  You will be more desirable and lovable when you are secure, confident, self assured, and living your life to the full.  Don’t let a man define you.  You are a whole being now and anything added to that is gravy;)  Enjoy your Valentine and be grateful, but even if you don’t have a significant other, you be the best Valentine to yourself today:)  Treat yourself well:)))
