Journey to Wholeness Retreat Re-Cap!

What an amazing time we had last weekend.  We had a group of women from all walks of life come together for an intimate time of reflecting, dancing, eating, and getting pampered.  For a lot of us, this was the first time ever meeting each other.  By the end of the weekend, you would have thought that we’ve known each other for twenty years!  We didn’t want to leave and the transformation on everyone’s faces was evident!  Everyone looked refreshed and rejuvenated.

One of the main inspirations for creating these weekend retreats was to help create a place for women to come and be themselves.  I wanted to cultivate a safe, non-judgmental environment for women to come and be heard, to share their hearts, and to be able to decompress.  We can be so busy sometimes and we don’t have the opportunity to slow down and just be still.  In those still moments, we can get in touch with what we’re really feeling and be able to share it in a place of love and empathy.

Our breakout star of the weekend was Nickey Robin!  Nickey served us tirelessly in the kitchen and bestowed all her incredible knowledge on nutrition and healthy eating.  We seriously feasted on amazing food all weekend!!!  We are so excited to be selling her cook book, “It’s Delicious!  With Nickalicious!”  You can pre-order here….BUY IT NOW!

Of course, there’s no way I could have done this alone!  I had great support and encouragement from amazing women who gave their hearts and trusted me in this process.  I am forever grateful for all of you!  You know who you are!!!  Every single person who came to the retreat came to give and serve and honestly, that’s why it went so awesome!  It was a team effort and we all benefited from it.

I applaud all the women who attended and took the time to invest in their whole being.  We definitely focused on our mind, body, and spirit.  We cried, laughed, had massages, ate a ton, and built long lasting, bonding friendships.  It was an unforgettable time and I can’t wait to do it again!

I’m so honored to be partnered with Vicki Hagadorn.  Vicki is a certified Grief Recovery Counselor and will be hosting workshops very soon.  The greatest gift you can give yourself is to make the investment in your personal and spiritual growth.  Check out her site here…

Day 20 of 21 Day Challenge!!!

I’m so excited!  I feel great, I’ve lost seven pounds and I’m not craving the bad stuff I normally used to eat.  It’s been super cold here in Austin and the one thing I really miss is going to Starbucks for a hot drink:)  Other than that, I really haven’t missed much.  I’m hoping to stay on course and eat a plant based diet while adding a little bit of chicken, turkey, and fish on occasion.  We’ll see.  I haven’t totally landed yet and that’s OK.  Our lifestyle change should be one that fits our lifestyle.  Just change a few things at a time and keep evolving.  Don’t get bullied into all the fads.  Pick one that works for you and if it doesn’t, adjust accordingly.

Mantra of the Day- Deal with your life or your Life will Deal with You!
This has been an amazing journey so far.  I’ve been really inspired by the team that I’m coaching.  They have grown and have been so diligent during this cleanse.  We have gotten clarity, had amazing breakthroughs, and have done a lot of soul searching.  Weight loss is not just about the physical.  It’s truly dealing with the whole package.  A lot of our bad habits and weight issues come when we have not dealt with our lives on a heart level.  What do you need to unpack and dig out today?  What is lurking in the shadows and hiding in the closets that need to be cleaned out?  There are many tools to deal with our pain.  One of the greatest tools I’ve used is called, “Grief Recovery”.  I’m lucky enough to be really good friends with several Grief Recovery facilitators.  Pain is always underneath grief, addiction, depression, anger, unforgiveness, etc…. Grief Recovery Institute is nation wide.  I have friends in Los Angeles and Austin, Tx that are facilitating classes.  Let me know if you’re interested and I will hook you up!

Workout of the Day!  ZUMBA

Love this one!  Turn it on loud and dance!!!

Much Love,

Life is a Balancing Act!

Hello Friends!
It’s been a while since I’ve blogged.  I’ve been quite busy trying to settle in a new city, then our family took an emergency trip to see my ailing father in the Philippines.  We were gone for almost a month and now we’re back trying to get in the groove.

Here we are visiting my Daddy.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of balancing my life.  It’s so easy for me to get obsessed with one area of my life and neglect everything else.  One thing about moving to Austin is that I’ve been able to let some things go from my life.  Number one, my stress factor has gone down just from not having to deal with LA traffic! LOL!  Also, I think the environment that I have been a part of my whole life has been to focus on the exterior.  Growing up close to Hollywood and being in the business, you become conditioned to a certain standard.  I’m not down on anyone, but for me, it’s been a little freeing not having to obsess about my weight, what I’m eating, how much I’m working out, etc…  I have to practice what I preach and that’s to live my life in a balanced way.  When you start to grasp the frailty of life, you really start to see what’s important.

Another area that is important to me are relationships.  I think that focusing on building and mending relationships are just as important as trying to get healthy.  It pains me to see “experts” in success, relationships, life coaching, etc…that are failing in their relationships.  I know a woman who is a life coach and she is so unhappy!  She’s given up on relationships and struggles with depression and is on medication.  I know a few others who are divorced and yet are teaching on how to have healthy relationships.  There’s no question that these people are “qualified” and have all kinds of credentials but for me, I’m much more impressed by someone’s example than the letters after their name.

So, for me, in this time of my life, I’m focused on being a great wife, a great mom, a great friend to many, a great coach and trainer, a person who lives a healthy lifestyle, and trying to be a great example.  Actually, I live my life as an example of what not to do sometimes!  I got in to the health and fitness industry not because I was a perfect picture of health but because my body was falling apart and I had to rebuild it.  My marriage is the best it’s ever been not because we’re perfect but because we’ve been through hell and back and have lived to tell about it.  I work out and teach fitness classes but I’m not afraid to live a little.  We went to National Cheesecake Day yesterday and I enjoyed a yummy, gluten free cheesecake guilt free!  I didn’t work out today and I don’t feel bad about it.  My point is, life is a lot more than being perfect and doing everything right.  Just take a deep breath and give yourself permission to be yourself.  Sometimes, we have to get to know ourselves.  It takes time.  It’s OK.  There’s no hurry.  Enjoy the journey.  Love the journey!  It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

****We have a new challenge group starting Aug. 24th to Oct. 2nd
We will be looking at what a balanced life looks like for you and how to overcome emotional eating.

Lastly, while I was in Manila, I had the honor to teach Zumba at one of the best Yoga studios in the city.  I Go Beyond Yoga!  Filipino people know how to party!!!  We rocked the house:)))

Day 25, 26, & 27 of Spring Clean Challenge!

Day 25, 26, & 27!

Hello guys!  I hope you’re doing well.  I am feeling great and getting stronger.  Sorry I missed the blog yesterday.  I am giving myself permission to be OK with letting things go. Please forgive me:)  Our bodies are amazing. Our bodies remind us that there is so much to learn.  I hope you are challenging yourself and trying new things.  You will amaze yourself by how strong you really are.  Sometimes strength means to be present and do nothing.  Sometimes, it takes more strength to do that:))))

1) Friday- Friday’s are our CORE day! We will be meeting at the park since it’s Spring Break!  I love that my clients don’t make excuses.  They want to work out and figured out a way to do it without having to get a sitter:)))  Meet us at Balboa Park 9:30-10:30am
We’ll start off at the bleachers:))))

We have a treat for you this weekend!!!  Karen from Fitness With Karen will be here to take care of our Zumba addiction:)  So dance with us and do your core exercises too!!!
Saturday at Pulse Fitness LA in Sherman Oaks!!!  11-12pm

SUNDAY- Is relax and unwind day.  Take a day to recover.  Quiet your mind, body and soul.  Whether or not you celebrate Easter Sunday, take some time to reflect on what the day represents.  A new day, a new beginning, a fresh start, redemption, hope, glory, and love.  Enjoy:))))

2) Food- Water!!!
I will keep reminding you guys to drink your water!!!  Be intentional about getting it all in.  Drink half of your weight in ounces.  For example, if you weigh 150 pounds you will drink 75 ounces of water daily.  Just make it a habit.  Carry your water bottle everywhere.  Do it!

3) Mantra of the Day! – Champions are not Born, They’re Made!!!
Everyday you have an opportunity to be a champion.  The only thing that separates the average people from the champions are the time and effort champions are willing to put in. It’s not automatic or genetic.  It’s not going to happen by osmosis.  It’s a CHOICE to take action towards your goals and not give in to laziness and excuses. Another thing about champions is that they have a short memory.  Shake it off and move on!  You decide!!!  It’s up to you:)))

Stop talking and just keep doing.  You ARE a CHAMPION!!!  Act like it!

Love you guys and I’m rooting for you:))) XOXO!!!

Day 23 of February Sweetheart Challenge!

Day 23

How’s it going?  Everyday is a new opportunity to change your life.  Don’t take this day for granted.  What you plant you will reap the benefits of.  It’s only four months until summer!!!  What are you planting today that you will reap in four months!?  Don’t procrastinate, don’t dilly dally, know that today makes a difference!

1) Tuesday- Try ZUMBA!

Tuesday is normally our cardio day.  I’m not a fan of cardio but I LOVE Zumba!  Try it:)
Just sayin’!;)

2) Food- Paleo Post! What do you think?  Have you tried it?

3. Mantra for the Day-  Let it go….
Part of the process of letting go is to not concern yourself with people’s opinions of yourself.  I know we talk about this a lot.  We need the reminders.  I need the reminders.  I’m so proud of one of my clients who has learned to turn off the negative tapes that go off when she starts to feel low.  Those tapes come back quickly and loud too!  She has learned to change the tapes and learn to replace it with good, positive, loving voices.  You can do it too.  Just input more positive and reject the negative.  You don’t have to listen to the critics.  You have to be your own biggest fan instead of your biggest enemy:)

Love you guys and I’m rooting for you:)))  XOXO!!!

Day 9 of January Detox Challenge!

Day 9-

It’s our second round of the three day detox.  I have eaten more vegetables in the last nine days than I have in the last nine weeks!!!  I’ve been loading my juices with tons of veggies and I made a homemade chicken vegetable soup with quinoa today.  Yummmmmm…it’s definitely soup weather:)))

1) Tuesday!  Try something new today:)))
Try something that you’ve never done before.  Yoga, Crossfit, Zumba, Pilates, etc….there’s so many great workouts out there.  Let us know what you chose:))))

2) Food- Day 9
I am so addicted to juicing right now!!!  I actually keep all my fruit and veggie scraps and add it in my juicer.  It’s a great way to save money and all the nutrients are in the skin and scraps:)  Check out these juicing recipes…

3) Mantra for the day:  Share Good News!!!

One of the best ways to change your attitude is to focus your attention on all the things that are going well in your life.  If you’re like me, I can tend to focus on the negative and become my worst critic.  Make it a habit to write a gratitude list.  It will redirect your thoughts and energy and you will find yourself a little more joyful:)))  Here are some great testimonials from our clients during this detox challenge!!!

“So I weighed myself this am. I wasn’t going to until Sunday, but I was just curious. I’ve lost 6 lbs! Still have a ways to go, but seeing the 6 lb loss was a big encouragement to me! Thanks Judy!”- Detox Member
“I’m proud of myself for not having wine this weekend, and still eating right. I try to cheat but I feel much better without all the extra junk!” -Detox Member
“So I lost 4lbs last week and I’m happy. I am doing things at my pace. This morning I had a Naked juice Berry Blast for bfast. I’m battling a cold and I’m not hungry.”- Detox Member
“Just made my first ever smoothie with kale, banana, almond milk, flax seed, greek yogurt and lived to tell the tale! I’m a big girl now!” -Detox Member
“Down 2.6 pounds since last Monday.” -Detox Member
“Weighed myself. Down 5 lbs. from Monday’s weigh in!!!! YAY!!!!” -Detox Member
“Lost 5 1/2 pounds!!! Yay!!! 10 1/2 pounds away from my goal. Can’t wait to try the new juicing recipe today after Zumba class! :) We can do this, I can do this and when we think we can’t, Pray and ask God for self-control!” -Detox Member

Make sure you share your good news today!!!  Great job everyone!!!  I’m so proud of you guys:)  Your hard work is paying off.  Keep it up!!!  The problem with success is a little bit.  Don’t think that you can put your guard down because you’ve had some victories.  Keep fighting and moving towards your goals!!!  You got this:)))

Love you guys and I’m rooting for you!!!  XOXO:)))

Day 2 January Detox Challenge!

Day 2-

How’s it going???  The key to success with this detox is preparation.  I had to run around and didn’t really get to eat the appropriate snacks, just nuts and by the time I got home, I was cranky, tired and wanted a Starbucks latte stat!!!!  I also ended up having too few calories for the day and not enough water.  Good news is that there is no perfect way to do this detox.  It’s all about trial and error and figuring out what works.  Be forgiving, learn from your day and move on.  Remember, “Champions have a short memory!”

1) Tuesday- Cardio Day
People always ask me, “What is the best workout for me to do?”  My answer, “The one you will do!” Find something that you enjoy and do that.  My problem is that I love it all!  I love yoga, Zumba, pilates, HIIT training, Tabata, kick boxing, dancing, etc…that’s why I love being a fitness trainer, I’m able to experiment and do all kinds of crazy things in my class.  So keep trying new things until you find the workout you love.  There’s so many to choose from.  What are you favorite workouts???

2) Food- Well day 1 of detox juicing wasn’t exactly mouth watering.  It’s amazing what fruit can do for your juice!  For the first three days of our detox, we are not having any fruit at all.  It’s all part of the sugar detox.  We’ll add it in after day three.  Also, we are cutting salt.  I think I missed salt more than sugar.  We are re-training our taste buds to go back to its natural state.  There are a lot of ways to get flavors naturally and creatively.  Let us know if you have any tricks or recipes:)  Please share!

3) Mantra for the day:  Success is not Convenient!
You’ve heard me say this before and especially in the beginning, we need to hear it again.  Prepping for our detox takes time and work.  Having to actually cook and not just open a pre-packaged meal is not convenient.  Working out and being sore is not convenient.  Juicing and cleaning the juicer is not convenient.  Carrying and packing your snacks is not convenient.  You choose.  If you want success, it’s going to take some work.  If you want to be average and mediocre then do what the rest of the population is doing.  Go eat fast food, drink soda,  microwave your meals, and be too busy to workout.  You’re either going to pay for it now in hard work or pay for it tomorrow in medical bills, health challenges and being overweight.  Stop thinking about it and just do the work.  No whining and complaining, just do it.  I believe in you.  You can do this:))))

Love you guys and I’m rooting for you!!!  XOXO:)))

Day 88 of 90 Day Challenge!

Day 88

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  Where the heck did 2012 go!?!?  WOW!  A lot happened this year but is it just me or did it go in lightning speed!?  It’s been a fabulous year doing what I love to do.  Thank you for being clients, friends, workout buddies, and even bystanders.  I know we are all inching away to our goals.  It doesn’t matter how slow or how fast we go, it’s all progress!

1. Thursday- Cardio Day!
Confession- I hate cardio.  I do a lot of strength training but cardo is really challenging for me.  Then, I discovered ZUMBA!!!  Zumba is not for everybody.  I know people who LOVE ZUMBA and people who absolutely HATE it!!!  Some people think you have to be coordinated to do it.  My motto is, “When in doubt, shake something!!!”  LOL!  You will leave the class dripping wet and burning lots of calories!  Try it. If you’re in town, I teach on Friday morning at Degas Dance Studio from 9:30-10:30am and Saturday at Pulse Fitness LA from 11-12pm!  We have a lot of fun!!!  It’s my version of clubbing these days;)))

2.  Food- Super food of the day! -Judy’s Green Shake
So if you knew me back in the day and I told you a healthy green shake would be named after me, you would die laughing.  A martini, maybe…but a green juice!?  NEVER!!!  Well, I have turned so many of my friends on to my green drink that if you go on and type in Judy’s Shake, this will come up:)))  Try it!
Here’s my green smoothie recipe: (in a blender)
1/4 cup blueberries
1/4 cup strawberries
1 banana
1 cup spinach or kale
1 cup almond milk
water to thicken or thin
one scoop of vanilla protein powder -(optional)
It’s soooooo good!  This makes about three 16oz servings.

Check out these other ‘green’ juice recipes….

3. Mantra for the day:  Mindset
Many of us get excited for the new year.  A new year feels like a second chance, a clean slate and a new opportunity to be different.  It all starts with our mindset.  If we are not ready mentally then it will be another year with written goals and little action.  You must be sick and tired of being sick and tired and make a decision to stick to your plan.  It’s not easy but it is possible!  I hope you will join us for our January Detox Challenge group.  Click here for details.   It takes a lot of effort to jump start a program like this and the more encouragement and accountability, the better.  There’s only a few spots left.  Act now!!!

Have a beautiful day! I love you guys and I’m rooting for you:)

Day 51 of 90 Day Challenge!

Day 51

Mama said there would be days like this…. “I don’t want to do this anymore.  This is too hard.  This takes too much effort.”  In those moments, I want you to look at your goals.  Remember the goals we wrote out in the beginning of the program?  I want you to ask yourself, “Are these goals still important to me?”  If the answer is “YES” then stop whining and complaining and keep going.:)))  Remember, in order to achieve our goals, we must work hard!!!

1. Tuesday- Cardio Day!  Question of the day.
Question:  “What is the best workout?”
Answer:  “The one that you will do!”  Seriously, not everyone is going to benefit from one specific workout.  You have to find the workout that you WANT to do.  What inspires you?  What is fun?  What challenges you and motivates you?  There are workouts that I absolutely love and I want everyone to do it because I LOVE it so much!  For instance, Yoga!  I love yoga and I bring friends to classes all the time.  I have some friends that loved it and some that hated it with a passion.  It’s OK.  Keep trying and you will find the workout that will be your passion.  Right now I love ZUMBA!  So much so that I got certified to teach it.  Come and take it with me:) Let me know what your favorite workout is:)

2.  Food- Super food of the day! – Green Smoothies:)
Ever since I saw the documentary, “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” I have been drinking my greens.  I have consumed more fruits and vegetables in the last six months than I have in the last three years!  I’m not exaggerating.  I also have my husband drinking my green potion.  That makes me so happy because I know he’s getting his nutrients and vitamins.  He’s also lost ten pounds just adding one shake to his diet.

Here’s my green smoothie recipe: (in a blender)
1/4 cup blueberries
1/4 cup strawberries
1 banana
1 cup spinach or kale
1 cup almond milk
water to thicken or thin
one scoop of vanilla protein powder -(optional)
It’s soooooo good!  This makes about three 16oz servings.

Check out these other ‘green’ juice recipes….

3. Mantra for the day:  Quitting is the Enemy to Success!!!
If you even ‘think’ about quitting, then you have already quit.  It’s so easy to quit.  It takes so much more character and a strong will to persevere.  Dig deep in your soul and remind yourself that you are worth fighting for.  It’s not too hard, too difficult, too painful, too (fill in the blank)…You are worth it and you deserve to live the life you were designed to have.  Be proactive about your health and wellness…It’s the only one you have:)))

Have a beautiful day! I love you guys and I’m rooting for you:)

Day 55 & 56 of 90 Day Challenge!

Day 54 & 55

I’m so proud of you guys! All the hard work and dedication is paying off.  Don’t look at what everyone else is doing.  Keep your eye focused on the goal!

1.  Saturday- Family fun day!  Incorporate your friends and family for a fun activity!  If you’re around come take my Zumba class at Pulse Fitness LA in Sherman Oaks.  Bring your friends and family!!!

Sunday- Take some time to relax and rejuvenate!!!  Enjoy:))

2.  Food- Super food of the day!!  EGGS!

3. Mantra for the day: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit.”– Aristotle

This is such an awesome quote!  Our daily habits are what will bring us success.  I know that sometimes life can be a little boring, we can be sick of eating the same things or doing the same exercises but as you’re working little by little everyday you are inching your way closer to your goals.  You may not be where you want to be yet, but at least you’re not where you started!  Enjoy the journey.  Don’t get so impatient and freak out when you’re not seeing results.  Do the work daily and you will get there.

Love you guys and I’m rooting for you:)))
